Of the many dog hybrids, we want to introduce to you the Pomchi. Learn their characteristics, personality, temperament and other facts. These will help you understand this charming Pomeranian and chihuahua mix.

When you talk about dogs, the first thing that comes to mind immediately are these beloved four-legged creatures that make life more eventful. Caring for one is synonymous to being a parent: you have to provide for their needs and keep them happy.

Being a dog parent, especially for the first time, can be quite stressful. For one, you have to be mindful about what breed you want. The Pomchi might be what you are looking for. Read on for facts on this charming hybrid.

POMCHI AT A GLANCE

The Pomchi or Chiranian is a cross between a Pomeranian and Chihuahua, which are two purebred dogs. Breeders intentionally mix these two breeds to achieve the characteristics unique to the Pomchi. This is why they are called a designer hybrid.

Major Kennel clubs do not recognize the Pomchi mainly because they are not a pure breed. However, they belong to the Designer Canine Registry and American Canine Hybrid Registry. The official names are Pomchi and Chiranian, respectively.

Based on the Chihuahua and Pomeranian size chart, it’s no wonder that the Pomchi is a small dog. They have an average height of 6 to 10 inches, and a weight of only 5 to 12 pounds. The Pomchi’s built and size makes them a toy dog. Facial features may vary from one dog to another depending on the mix. Generally, they retain the Pomeranian fluffy coat although not as pronounced.

Most Pomchis can have small and rounded heads with large eyes. It ultimately depends on how much Pomeranian and chihuahua mix they have in their genes. Their furry ears that stand erect are the highlights of their foxlike appearance. They can have long torsos, too.

COAT AND COLOR

As this is a mixed breed, it might be hard to predict whether which side it will have more out of, especially when it comes to the coat. Some will have short or long, double or single. The genetic dominance of one breed may determine what coat the pup will get.

The mixed breed offspring may acquire the infamous Pomeranian shedding. Observe the patterns of shedding to give them the suitable care they need. Also, most Pomchis may need brushing once every week, regular haircuts and bathing to keep them healthy and clean.

The most common Pomchis are light brown, but there is a wide range of colors they can have: dark brown, fawn, sable, merle, gray, cream, tan, white and cream.

There are lesser black and tan Pomchis and even more unusual pure black ones. However, these are more sought after due to their uniqueness.

These dogs may have one or a mix of two colors. Again, the sire’s and dam’s physical traits will determine such characteristics.

TEMPERAMENT AND PERSONALITY

The Pomchi gets the best of both worlds for being a Pomeranian and chihuahua mix. It has a character of its own that makes them more suitable for adult humans than kids. They have a generally good temperament, but may also be standoffish especially to strangers.

With its chihuahua genes, the pup will tend to be livelier and more energetic. Their 50% Pomeranian blood makes them perky, obedient and approachable. They are also alert, which could mean that they are enthusiastic barkers. They like to alert their owner with any potential threat they may encounter.

Pomchis are curious little fellows, which displays the Pomeranian intelligence they may take from their mom or dad. This and their affectionate nature make them natural cuddlers. However, they become vocal especially when they are left on their own. Separation anxiety is a particular issue that can stress them out. This can make them scratch, bark, chew, dig, defecate or urinate when left alone.

TRAINING AND EXERCISE NEEDS

You need to train your pup early to keep undesirable habits in check. This can effectively eliminate excessive barking due to stranger-danger reaction. Diligence is the main key if you are looking to house train a Pomchi because it can be quite a challenge. Reward training and establishing authority are important in teaching obedience because they can be stubborn sometimes.

It would help greatly if you can ensure that the Chihuahua parent has a friendly personality. You may expose your Pomchi puppy to home visitors every day from 8-14 weeks old. Taking them to different places to meet new people can also help them assimilate better with people.

The Pomchi is an energetic dog, so you have to exercise them regularly to keep them healthy and vigorous. You can take them to long walks which not only satisfies their fitness needs but also their curiosity with the outdoors. Be careful about exposing them to heat, though; Pomchis aren’t very tolerant with extremely sunny days.

HEALTH AND LIFESPAN

The advantage of having a crossbreed is that they may be slightly healthier than their ancestors. However, you should always take care of your Pomchi’s health. They can be genetically prone to diseases that affect their purebred parents.

The breeder should have the right knowledge and experience to get the Pomeranian and chihuahua mix with the optimal health that you desire. You should have the sire and dam tested for any medical condition like dental, knee, ear or eye problems. This to ensure that the puppy grows up without any issue.

Mixed breeds tend to live longer than their purebred ancestors, but it depends on how healthy you keep them. The Pomchi can live well up to 19 years if taken care of, with an average lifespan of 7-12 years.
